“Stand Up For” is an annual local fundraising effort by Brittany Page and Kristin Postill where they stand up paddleboard the length of Kalamalka Lake in support of a chosen charity. This year, in the wake of COVID, they’re paddling for The People Place! While the ‘event’ happens August 8th – donations toward the cause can be made at any time before or after the event by clicking on the DONATE NOW button. All donations are being handled by the Community Foundation of the North Okanagan and all donors will receive a tax receipt! Show your support!
The People Place is a registered charity managing a building full of charities and non-profits that make our community such an amazing place to live. Imagine a building where every single tenant has a mission to help people! Each floor houses organizations that focus on causes ranging from mental health to supporting people with disabilities, from family counselling resources and crisis lines, to coordinating income tax services for the elderly and low income, to hosting a Christmas Sale for children to pick out a gift for a parent or sibling when shopping retail is just not in the family budget.
The People Place houses charitable and non-profit tenants as well as offers meeting space to many other community groups. The unique thing about the space is that the building itself is ‘non-profit’ meaning rents are set low to barely cover operational needs. The People Place raises all additional funds needed to subsidize rents through fundraising, grant seeking, and gifts from generous donors. Without a place like the People Place, charitable organizations would end up diverting resources to paying higher rent instead of keeping overhead low and staying focused on service delivery.
Along with subsidized rent, the building offers meeting rooms at reduced costs and promotes a sense of collegiality that the North Okanagan voluntary sector is known for. There are four meeting rooms of various sizes used daily by tenants and other community groups as a space to collaborate, celebrate and learn. For more details or to rent the space call 250-558-6585
Current tenants include: Independent Living Vernon, The Literacy Society North Okanagan, Family Resource Centre, Community Foundation of the North Okanagan and many more.
