Community foundations are charitable organizations dedicated to improving communities in specific geographic areas. We do this by pooling the charitable gifts of donors to create endowment funds and using the investment income to make grants. Community foundations also provide leadership – monitoring our area’s quality of life and convening people, ideas, and resources to help build stronger and more resilient communities. A community foundation is truly a charity for all charities!
Who We Are
Enhancing the quality of life in the communities of the North Okanagan.
The Community Foundation of the North Okanagan is dedicated to improving the quality of life in the region by distributing the earnings from a permanent, ever-growing pool of funds and embracing innovative grantmaking opportunities.
The three principle roles of a community foundation are Donor Relations, Grantmaking, and Community Leadership:
An endowment fund at the Community Foundation of the North Okanagan gives you all the flexibility, involvement, and recognition of a private foundation while relieving you of the ‘back-office’ and financial stewardship responsibilities. Your focus will be on creating positive change while we provide the support and services to make it happen. We make it simple for you.
Community Knowledge and Grantmaking
We know our communities well. Sharing our unique understanding of the power of philanthropy is one of our most important services. We research and report on the North Okanagan’s quality of life in our semi-annual North Okanagan Vital Signs 2017. We also guide donors to specific community initiatives aligned to issues identified in Vital Signs®. Our donors rely on us for information, due diligence, and advice on specific charities of interest to them. Our extensive community contacts enable us to provide objective and accurate assessments. Our annual Smart & Caring Community Granting program allows groups doing valuable work in our communities to apply for funding support that enables them to offer programs that impact our quality of life.
Our unique position as an independent public foundation enables us to be a catalyst for change. We mobilize donors and other leaders to tackle complex quality of life issues in creative and inspiring ways. Our community knowledge informs our grantmaking and strengthens our ability to connect issues, convene partners, and develop solutions.
